The Blue Heart Campaign is an initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime. Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos is a proud supporter.
- It is an awareness raising initiative to fight human trafficking and its impact on society.
- It seeks to encourage involvement and to inspire action to help stop this crime.
- It allows people to show solidarity with the victims of human trafficking by wearing the Blue Heart.
- The Blue Heart represents the sadness of trafficking victims, the cold-heartedness of the perpetrators and the commitment of the United Nations to fight this crime.
The Turks & Caicos, with a population of 32,000 spread over 40 islands and cays, is 90 nautical miles from Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with a population of 9 + million. Many Haitians attempt to find a better way of life but fall prey to criminal elements in Haiti who convince them to sell much if not all their property to sail in overcrowded, unseaworthy, sloops. Some survive but many perish at sea.
Over the years Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos has partnered with the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime (www.unodc.org), UN.GIFT (Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking – www.ungift.org), the United States Coast Guard, Crime Stoppers Bahamas and Crime Stoppers Miami-Dade in various initiatives aimed at telling potential Haitian victims the truth to contradict the lies of criminal traffickers and smugglers.
